All of the gas Poulan chainsaws are two cycle engines which means that you must use an oil additive to your gas before filling your chainsaw. It is the cc’s that make the difference in your two cycle engines and Poulan chainsaws offers you a variety of sizes ranging from 33cc’s to 46cc’s. This means the larger the cc, the harder your Poulan chainsaw will work for you. All of the gas chainsaws by Poulan are powerful tools but the more cc’s your chainsaw feeds your engine, the more rpm’s your chain will make. This makes large jobs much faster and easier.

Motor Size of Electric Chainsaws

Electric motors of Poulan chainsaws are measured in horse power or hp. The smaller the hp the less powerful they are. Poulan chainsaws offers you a wide variety of electric chainsaws that range from 1.5 hp all the way up to 4.0 hp. Poulan chainsaws that give you four full hp are generally the equivalent of a small lawn mower motor. These are great for medium jobs such as small trees, shrubs and tree branches but would not hold up well for cutting many large trees and cutting it into firewood for the winter.

Bar Length of Poulan Chainsaws

There are various bar lengths to Poulan chainsaws ranging from fourteen to twenty inches in the gas versions and from fourteen to eighteen in the electric versions. Of course all of these decisions are your choice and should be considered very carefully before making your purchase. If you have just had your dream home completed and are looking at the whole picture, something is missing, the landscaping. Now you have a decision to make as to what to do with the barren soil that is staring you in the face and muddying up your sneakers. You can either hire a landscaper and pay thousands of dollars for them to set your lawn up or plan your lawn the way you want it. You will save yourself a bundle if you simply sow your own grass and plant your own flower beds.

Clearing the Dirt for Seeding

Before you begin seeding your soil, you should clean it up by examining the top of the soil for rocks, metal, glass and concrete. If you locate any of this remove it promptly. You will most likely be cleaning up the contractor’s mess of concrete drippings, broken bricks, rocks and glass that were simply used as lawn filler. Many contractors use these to fill in the lawn to make it level and then put fill dirt in on top of it. Next you will have to have the first six inches tilled up and remove any debris you find there as well.

Choosing the Grass Seed

Find out what type of grass grows easily in your area. This can be done by contacting your local farm bureau corporation or the local branch of the Department of Agriculture. They will be able to tell you which types of grass are grown easily and how to care for them once they begin to grow. Choose the grass seed you want and make sure you have enough to cover the entire square footage of your lawn. You can dig out the grass when it comes time to plant your flower gardens. You may want to test the soil to make sure your soil has the right mixture of nitrogen, phosphorus and magnesium to grow your grass strong and lush.

Sowing the Seeds

Once you have cleared the soil, tilled it up, cleared it again and chosen your seed, it is time to begin sowing. Add the seed to a spreader and spread it over the lawn taking care not to over seed or under seed. Under seeding will leave bare patches and over seeding will cause your lawn to grow in thick, chunky patches. After you have spread the seed, water the soil well and cover it with straw. The straw keeps the birds and squirrels from consuming the seeds before they actually have a chance to root. Cover the straw with a wire mesh that keeps birds and squirrels from stealing your straw.

Watch your Grass Grow

Keep an eye on your lawn’s growth. As it grows and you notice bare spots, sprinkle a little seed in its place and allow it to take root. When your grass grows to approximately four inches in length, you can remove the wire mesh and mow your lawn. Mow with a sharp blade and a bagger so you can collect the trimmings.

Compost is a combination of fertilizer, food and mulch of everything your plants or lawn needs. Composts are used for a variety of different jobs like vegetable gardens, flower gardens, potting soil for indoor plants or for your barren lawn. These tips will help you get your compost started for next year’s gardens and lawn.

Create your Pile

You don’t have to have a bin to put your clippings in to create a compost. You can simply pile your leaves, grass and other lawn waste on in an inconspicuous pile that is convenient to your garden and your kitchen. You can opt to purchase a permanent bin or even build your own by making a compartment of slatted wood.

The Materials that Make Up a Compost

Compost materials are easy to compile. All you need is greens and browns. Greens are any garden debris such as plants that have ceased producing fruit, grass clipping or old annuals. Browns are dry leaves, table scraps less the meats oils and dairy products and old straw or hay. Do not use animal waste, diseased plants, treated plants or weeds that have began to seed. Your pile should be composed of one part green to two parts brown materials. This combination breaks down faster than even amounts. Piles that are three foot square and three foot high tend to heat up quicker and bread down faster.

The Correct Amount of Moisture

Compost needs moisture just like your garden. The moisture helps break down the elements of the pile and mix them together. Your compost should feel like a damp sponge. If your use too much moisture it can cause the compost to begin smelling. Too little moisture will not heat up the pile and it will not break down the pile at all. It should be checked at least once a week and adjusted accordingly. To decrease the moisture add more brown to the mixture. Simply add water if it is too dry.

Turning your Compost Mixture

Your pile should be turned weekly. Composts begin breaking down and decomposing from the middle and bottom out. Turning the mixture allows the top materials to become the middle and bottom helping them begin the decomposing process as well. This also prevents your pile from being compressed. This reduces the airflow and will slow down the decomposing.

Your Finished Compost

You will recognize when your compost is ready for use because it won’t heat up any longer and you will not be able to identify any of the original materials used. It will be dark brown, moist and have an earthy smell to it. This process generally takes six to twelve months if the compost is not covered. A typical, uncovered compost will decompose much slower than a covered one. However if you do not use a bin you can cover it with medium weight plastic to keep it moist and heat the pile up. This will promote faster decomposing which should be completed within a couple of months.
